Probation & Parole : What We Do

Michigan Department of Corrections Vision:

INTEGRITY, EXCELLENCE, INCLUSION AND TEAMWORK GUIDE THE WAYS WE PROTECT MICHIGAN’S CITIZENS.

The criminal justice system consists of law enforcement, prosecution, defense, courts and corrections, which respond to the public safety needs of communities and the victims of crime.  The primary function of the criminal justice system is to respond to crime and to help protect the public.  The Michigan Department of Corrections’ mission communicates that we are a critical component of the broader criminal justice system.

Michigan Department of Corrections Mission:

KEEPING MICHIGAN’S CITIZENS AND OUR STAFF SAFE BY PROVIDING EFFECTIVE OFFENDER SUPERVISION IN OUR PRISON FACILITIES AND COMMUNITIES.

The goal of the Michigan Department of Corrections is to provide the greatest amount of public protection in a cost-efficient manner that is consistent with proven methods.  We, the employees of the Department, meet the goal by:

-ensuring that the State’s judges and other criminal justice administrators have the broadest possible array of viable sentencing and sanctioning options,

-assessing each offender’s risk, needs, and strengths to provide meaningful treatment, programming and opportunities throughout the sentence, so that each offender can become a law-abiding, productive citizen,

-maintaining safe and secure prison facilities where prisoners are prepared for successful community reentry, and

-maintaining effective supervision of offenders on probation and parole, and responding appropriately to violation behavior.
